The American Gem Society has published the third edition of the book “The Practical Guide to Jewelry Appraising,” by appraisal expert Cosmo Altobelli. The new edition contains improvised content and according to Altobelli, a Certified Gemologist Appraiser, the content is targeted at both seasoned and novice appraisers alike. “It’s a common mistake to think gemological knowledge is all that is required in appraising jewellery,” he said. “This book introduces the reader to the methodologies of appraising and setting up a professional appraisal service.”

The new edition features updated resource Web sites, sample letters and forms, metal pricing charts, gemstone weight estimation charts, and information on cut grades of the American Gem Society and Gemological Institute of America. This 261-pager soft-cover book can be bought thgrough the $69 through the AGS.

The content has been divided into topics of Twenty-four different types of appraisals and reports; Take-in procedure; Valuation of treated gemstones; Marketing and advertising; Fees; Specific descriptions; Fair market value; Mediation and arbitration; Sample appraisals, contracts, and forms; Expert witness and lastly Sixteen personal case histories.
